Project overview

Turning open knowledge into actionable insight

Founded at Curtin University in 2017, COKI brings together humanities scholars, data scientists and software developers to explore how open knowledge can reshape higher education.

Using big data and cloud computing, COKI gathers, curates and analyses publicly available research data at massive scale. Its tools help universities, funders and research institutions understand open access, research funding and broader global research trends.

COKI has developed interactive platforms including the Open Access Dashboard, Research Funding Dashboard and Book Analytics Dashboard, turning complex datasets into accessible insights for researchers and institutions.

Before

After

Scattered research data → Connected knowledge

Research information was distributed across diverse public data sources, making large-scale analysis difficult.

Scattered research data → Connected knowledge

COKI brings data from multiple sources together into a large-scale open knowledge dataset.

Enables research trends to be analysed across institutions, countries and disciplines.

Complex datasets → Accessible insights

Understanding global open access and research patterns required working directly with complex datasets.

Complex datasets → Accessible insights

Interactive dashboards make these patterns easier to explore and compare.

Gives universities, researchers and other stakeholders a clearer view of global research trends.

Open access questions → Measurable trends

It was difficult to track how open research outputs were changing over time and across institutions.

Open access questions → Measurable trends

The Open Access Dashboard tracks open access status by country and institution over time.

Supports a more evidence-based understanding of the transition towards open research.

Funding data → Visible research patterns

National research funding patterns were difficult to explore in a single, accessible view.

Funding data → Visible research patterns

The Research Funding Dashboard visualises funding patterns and flows.

Makes large-scale funding trends easier to investigate and compare.
